‘Tis the giving season; why not wine? A thoughtfully chosen wine can be a creative gift, and one that will certainly be appreciated. This holiday season, we’d like to offer our ideas on pairing the people on your gift list with the perfect Taigan wine.
FOR THE WHITE WINE LOVER– SIX VINTAGES OF MICHAUD CHARDONNAY
Michael Michaud is impressive, and yet one of the most humble people you’ll ever meet. For 20 years, he was the winemaker at Chalone—one of a handful of truly historic California wineries that put the state on the fine wine map back in the 1970’s. When Chalone was taken over by a big soulless conglomerate, Michael knew it was time to create his own project.
In a word, his wines are anomalous. The gorgeous and graceful pinots noirs and chardonnays ooze sophistication, and most interestingly…they last. Not many wineries in America can claim that their wines (especially their whites) age with grace. In a world where most wines are mass-produced and meant for drinking now, Michael’s wines make an exceptional gift. The white wine lover will go gaga over the Michaud Chardonnay Six Bottle Vertical – it includes one bottle of each vintage from 2001-2006.
FOR THE BOSS – BLACKBIRD PARAMOUR
“Merlot,” you ask, “isn’t merlot passé these days?” The answer is no. Well-made, serious merlots like Blackbird’s—which are inspired by the renowned wines of Bordeaux’s right bank—will always be in style.
From the prestigious winemaking team, to the elegant, artful label, and especially the experience of drinking these sophisticated wines, Blackbird is tres chic. We love the 2007 Blackbird Paramour, with its complex blend of sour cherry, chocolate, mint and tobacco flavors.
FOR THE SPOUSE– ELYSE LOVER’S CASE
Nothing says I love you like 12 bottles of robust, lip-smacking Elyse wines. A Taigan best seller, the Elyse Lover’s Case includes one bottle of each wine this well-respected Napa winery produces—from big, warm syrah and grenache-based blends, to powerful cabernets, and of course legendary zinfandels, this is a gift of pure liquid love.
FOR THE EUROCENTRIC– SIX PACK OF 2001 RIOJAS FROM THE SPANISH TABLE
The team at Spanish Table is on a hunt—for rare, exceptional Spanish and Portugese wine and food. Their passion, and their tenacious pursuit of the extraordinary, defines their niche. They have an aged fine wine collection that you just simply cannot find in other wine stores.
If you have a Eurocentric epicure on your list, wow them with Spanish Table’s Gift Pack of Six 2001 Riojas. This six pack is a collection of their favorite (and coicedentally some of the most revered) Reserva and Gran Reserva Riojas from the fabulous 2001 vintage.
Baker Lane is the best little winery you’ve never heard of. Stephen Singer, an iconic San Francisco wine consultant and foodie, has helped build the wine lists of top Bay Area restaurants. Several years ago, he decided to take it a step further and get his hands dirty –literally. Stephen created Baker Lane Vineyards, in southern Sonoma, as a way to bring his experience with wine full-circle. In the rolling vineyards he crafts an extremely limited quantity of chardonnay, pinot noir and syrah. His wines are full and rich, but poised to pair with a variety of foods.
For the food and wine person who thinks they know it all, surprise them with a treasure—one of Stephen’s elegant wines. Our current favorite is the 2008 Baker Lane Estate Syrah, which has bewitching aromas of sweet herbs and pepper. While you’re inside the Baker Lane store on Taigan, make sure you pick up some of the incredible olive oils and balsamic vinegars that Stephen imports from Italy.
